Mia-Jane Harris

Harris’ work delves into the fascinatingly odd and morbidly beautiful. She aims to intrigue the viewer and pull them in to her world with strange objects and curious juxtapositions to manipulate their emotions on the subject of mortality – life, death & resurrection. She gives a second life, an artistic resurrection, to second hand objects and found ‘junk’ materials in the hope that in return this second chance she gives them will help her live on through these creations when she is gone. After studying fine art at ‘City & Guilds of London Art School’ and ‘University of East London’ she has now been exhibiting internationally for 8 years.

About Work

Harris created this assemblage sculpture during the first couple of days of self-isolation. It is constructed out of hoarded vintage items and found materials that she was locked inside her house with. This piece expresses the protective role of parents during the Covid 19 crisis and the way that staying safe at home can strengthen family bonds within your quarantined household. Harris has used a vintage Madonna & Child figure for the basis of the piece to also represent the comfort and hope that religious communities share to lift spirits and reduce fear during dire circumstances such as these.
