Hannah Kate Absalom

Hannah Kate Absalom

Absalom’s work explores the themes of religion, dogma and the supernatural, most obviously through her contemporary interpretation of mythologies and iconography, and crucially in more subtle, but certainly more common forms. These include the symbolism and semantics of body gestures, shapes, colours, abstract words and sounds, which are, in their essence, meaningless, but have been used since ancient times to represent particular beliefs and beings, so tend to be very emotive and recognisable by the viewer. Absalom’s artwork tends to take the form of oil paintings, woodcuts and short films with recent experimentation into collage, sculpture and installation.

About Work

CAELUM is part of an investigation into the historical significance of blue and the image/emotions it evokes. CAELUM responds to cerulean, used within artwork to colour the sea/sky – historically representing the heavens and the expansive, but after the first NASA photographs of Earth from space, came to represent home. The combination of familiarity and insignificance can be both suffocating and immensely lonely. Covid-19 is forcing us into the confinements of our homes and our heads, an experience with the capacity to catalyse the same overwhelming distress experienced by our ancestors, looking out at the monstrous expanse of the sea.
