Lorraine Cleary

Cleary received a Masters in 2015 and a First Class Honours degree from LSAD in 2014. She was highly commended for the 2014 programme of the Undergraduate Awards in the Visual Arts and the Media & Arts categories. Previous exhibitions include the ‘188th Annual Exhibition’ RHA, a solo show at the Alley Arts Centre Tyrone, Cairde Visual Sligo, Oughterard Galway, Tactic Cork and Rural Shame at the Custom House Studios. Upcoming projects include a collaboration with 126 gallery, and a solo show at Tipperary Excel in 2021. Currently, Cleary is on a curatorial residency and working towards an exhibition.

About Work

This work responds to theme of isolation, but it differs in that it is not a representation of solidarity but instead its emphasis is on loneliness and isolation as a result of living within a coercive environment, Room 10 x 8; circa 1990 is constructed to the dimensions of a small room, its entrance is unconnected, its title refers to an era prior to social media which only serves to enhance its solitude. Adapting to the gallery space, and viewing it in correlation with the space of the home by bringing the private out into the public in a move to open up a discourse around the hidden injustices of the female within the home.
